Governors

School governors are drawn from all walks of life, with each bringing his or her unique skills and experience to the role of school leadership. You do not have to be a working professional, just someone who wants to be involved and make a difference

What does a Governor do?

Governors are responsible for working with the headteacher to raise standards of achievement for all pupils at the school, for setting the budget and for overseeing the curriculum.

They also have powers with respect to the appointment and dismissal of staff and the exclusion and re-instatement of pupils.

Why do schools need Governors?

Every school has a Governing Body to represent the public in the running of schools. School Governors bring perspectives from ordinary life and work with the staff and the local authority to help secure the best possible education for the children in the school.

They have important responsibilities such as managing the school budget, overseeing the curriculum and appointing staff.

Visit the Department of Education and Norfolk Governor Services website for more detailed information on roles and responsibilities.

Annual Governance Statement for the Governing body of Holly Meadows School.

In accordance with the Government’s requirement for all governing bodies, the three core strategic functions of Holly Meadows Governing body are:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos & strategic direction

“Inspire Challenge Encourage”

  1. Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
  2. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

Governance Arrangements.

The Governing body of Holly Meadows was re-constituted in September 2014 and is now made up of

  • One Local Authority
  • Four Parent
  • Four Co-opted
  • One staff governor.

Co-opted governors are appointed by the Governing Body and are people who, in the opinion of the governing body, have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance of the school.

The full governing body meet once each term and we also have a number of sub-committees to consider different aspects of the school in detail.

At Holly Meadows we have a Finance, Management & Premises Committee which focuses on the finance, premises and some personnel matters and a Teaching & Learning committee.

We also have a Steering committee made up of the chairperson from each group, along with the head teacher to oversee and allocate the work of the other committees.

Attendance record of governors.

Governors have an excellent attendance record at meetings and we have never cancelled a meeting because it was not “quorate” (the number of governors needed to ensure that legal decisions can be made). See attached details of attendance

The work that we have done on our committees and in the governing body.

The Governing Body along with the Leadership Team has had a busy year focusing on school improvement, staff changes and an impending Ofsted inspection.

The Teaching & Learning Committee has spent time considering the introduction of the new curriculum and analysing key data which gives results of pupil achievement and progress, so that we can be sure that the school is on track to fulfil its ambitious targets.

We are also concerned about our “vulnerable groups” of children and focus on how the Pupil Premium Grant is being spent by the school and what impact it has on their outcomes.

The Finance, Management & Premises Committee looks at the use of the school budget to make decisions on the maintenance and development of the premises, staffing and general resources of the school ensure we achieve “value for money”.

Our qualified Health & Safety Governor carries out termly checks of the premises with the head teacher. Governors are also particularly concerned about safeguarding and we have a nominated Governor for safeguarding who report to the Full Governing Body on any safeguarding matters.

The school website has been re-designed and updated and now contains comprehensive details of the school and the governors.

The school budget for the next 12 months has been approved and we are pleased to report the school is in a healthy position enabling us to run the classes recently communicated by the head teacher and make further improvements to the school premises including the replacement of the majority of the doors and windows throughout the school.

One of the roles for the governors is reviewing and agreeing school policies and this year we have agreed a number of key policies including Behaviour Management, Safeguarding and Performance Management which are available for viewing on the school’s website or from the school office.

The Attendance policy has also been updated following legislation which no longer allows school to authorise term time holidays and whilst we recognise the problem this may cause for some parents, attendance figures have improved.

Minutes of all Governing Body & Committee meetings are public documents – you can find a summary of them on our website and a hard copy of the full minutes can be obtained from the school office.

Future Plans for the governors

Governors will continue to work with the Leadership Team to ensure educational and financial performance and already making plans for September 2015 when you will see the new teaching and class arrangements in place as well as further improvement to the building.

How to contact the governing body

We always welcome suggestions, feedback and ideas from parents – please contact the Chair of Governors, via the school office. You can also see a full list of governors; their attendance at meetings: minutes of governing body meetings and more information about the school and what we do, on the Governors’ page of the school website.
